The Structural Heart Programme is designed to provide specialised treatment for complex heart valve and structural conditions using next-generation technologies. A key component of this programme, TAVI offers a non-surgical alternative for patients diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis — a condition in which narrowing of the aortic valve restricts blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body. Instead of traditional open-heart surgery, the procedure involves delivering a replacement valve through a catheter inserted via a small incision, typically in the groin, and guiding it to the heart using advanced imaging techniques.
The successful execution of the initial TAVI cases reflects the hospital’s commitment to expanding treatment options for high-risk and elderly patients who may not be ideal candidates for conventional surgery. Compared to open valve replacement, TAVI generally results in reduced hospital stays, quicker recovery, and less physical trauma, enabling patients to return to daily activities sooner.
