WHO Director-General Concludes First Day of State Visit to Jordan, Highlights Strong Health Partnership

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, concluded the first day of his two-day State visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan today, emphasizing the deep and ongoing collaboration between WHO and Jordan in advancing universal health coverage (UHC), mental health, and humanitarian health initiatives.

A key highlight of the visit was a meeting with His Majesty King Abdullah II, underscoring Jordan’s leadership in health and its role as a regional hub for humanitarian assistance. Discussions centered on strengthening national health systems, expanding access to essential care, and sustaining emergency health responses for vulnerable populations, including patients evacuated from Gaza, Palestinian communities, and refugees hosted in Jordan.

Dr. Tedros expressed his gratitude for Jordan’s leadership, saying, “I wish to express my appreciation to His Majesty King Abdullah II for his commitment to advancing universal health coverage. I also extend my thanks to His Majesty and the people of Jordan for their solidarity and generosity in providing health services to more than three million refugees, primarily from Gaza and Syria.”

The visit also highlighted Jordan’s proactive role in promoting mental health as a national priority, with WHO and Jordan exploring collaborative initiatives to improve access to mental health services across the country. In addition, the discussions included strategies to enhance regional emergency preparedness and response capacities, recognizing Jordan’s crucial contribution to humanitarian health in the Middle East.

This visit marks a significant milestone in WHO-Jordan relations, reaffirming the Kingdom’s commitment to global health priorities while supporting vulnerable populations through robust and resilient health systems. Dr. Tedros is scheduled to visit key health facilities and humanitarian centers tomorrow to witness first-hand Jordan’s health interventions and ongoing partnership with WHO.
