Breast Cancer Cases in India More Than Double Since 1990, Global Study Raises Alarm

Breast cancer cases in India have more than doubled since 1990, according to findings from a recent global health study, highlighting a growing public health challenge in the country. The report indicates that changing lifestyles, increasing life expectancy, urbanization, and limited early screening are among the key factors contributing to the rising number of cases.

Researchers noted that breast cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in India, surpassing cervical cancer in many regions. The study shows that while awareness and diagnostic capabilities have improved over the past few decades, many women are still diagnosed at later stages of the disease, which reduces survival rates and increases the burden on the healthcare system.

Health experts warn that the surge in cases reflects broader shifts in risk factors, including delayed childbirth, lower breastfeeding rates, obesity, lack of physical activity, and dietary changes associated with urban lifestyles. Environmental factors and genetic predispositions may also play a role.

Despite the increase in cases, the study also highlights progress in treatment and survival outcomes where early detection programs are available. However, access to screening facilities such as mammography remains uneven, especially in rural and low-income areas. Public health specialists stress the need for stronger awareness campaigns, routine screening programs, and improved healthcare infrastructure to detect the disease earlier.

The findings underscore the urgency for policymakers to expand cancer prevention strategies, promote regular health check-ups for women, and invest in early detection initiatives. Experts say that with timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, breast cancer outcomes can improve significantly, making awareness and screening critical in reducing mortality rates in the coming years.
