Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has emphasized that expanding health insurance coverage is a key priority for the government, with an ambitious goal of ensuring that every citizen in India is covered by 2033.
Speaking at a recent event, Sitharaman highlighted the importance of strengthening the country’s healthcare system by making insurance more accessible and affordable. She noted that while significant progress has been made in recent years through schemes like Ayushman Bharat, there is still a need to bridge gaps in coverage, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
The minister explained that the government is working on multiple fronts to achieve this target. These include expanding existing public health insurance programs, encouraging greater participation from private insurers, and leveraging digital platforms to streamline enrollment and claims processing. She also stressed the role of state governments in collaborating with the Centre to ensure wider outreach and effective implementation.
Sitharaman pointed out that rising healthcare costs can push families into financial distress, making insurance coverage essential for economic security. By aiming for universal coverage, the government hopes to reduce out-of-pocket expenses and improve access to quality healthcare services across the country.
Experts believe that achieving full coverage by 2033 will require sustained policy support, increased funding, and public awareness campaigns. However, the government remains optimistic that with coordinated efforts, the goal of comprehensive health insurance for all citizens can be realized within the next decade.
