  1. Reduce your time outsideThere is an increase in air pollution due to harmful gases and toxic substances being released into the environment by bursting firecrackers that contain compounds like barium, cadmium, sodium, mercury, nitrate and nitrite. The Respirable Suspended Particulate matter (RSPM) goes high as small particles enter deep into the lungs and airway. People with asthma are prone to respiratory issues and should avoid crowded places, markets, melas, and places with smoke and polluted air to avoid triggering their breathing issues.
  2. Avoid bursting firecrackersAny smoke, carbon particles and chemical vapours from firecrackers can aggravate asthma and allergic conditions. These particles stick in the nostrils for a longer time and precipitate an attack of allergic rhinitis, asthma, bronchitis and breathing issues. All these are bound to affect the lungs and increase morbidity and mortality during the Diwali season. In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is an additional risk of worsening respiratory and lung problems.
  3. Stay indoorsElderly, children and people with breathing issues should preferably stay indoors to avoid cold temperatures, smoke and air pollution outside. Staying indoors will help them decrease their exposure to smoke and toxic fumes and prevent the trigger of respiratory breathing problems.
  4. Eat healthy and stay hydratedA well-balanced, healthy diet with fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of asthma and allergic conditions. Stay hydrated and take an adequate amount of water and liquids. Avoid sweets, fried food, refined grains, processed food and dessert, which have an inflammatory effect on your body.
  5. Avoid alcoholYour lungs are already exposed to toxic fumes, smoke and irritants during the Diwali season. Alcoholic drinks like wine and beer trigger asthma and bronchitis attacks. It is best to avoid alcoholic beverages.
  6. Steam inhalationSteam will help clean your nose and lungs, clear mucous and phlegm (balgum) and help you breathe easier. Inhale steam for 5 to 10 minutes at least once daily to clear the respiratory system.
  7. Asthma Medications and InhalersPatients with asthma and respiratory disease should strictly continue with their medicines, inhalers and nebulizers as advised by their doctor. Adhere to Asthma Control Plan to keep yourself symptom-free during the festive season.Check out: Asthma: Debunking Myths About Using Inhalers
  8. Refill your medicines and inhaler supplyPatients should keep an adequate stock of their regular medication and inhalational therapy so they need not worry and have an adequate supply of their regular drugs. Keep your inhalational therapy devices handy and early accessible, so you can use them as required.
  9. Act fastDespite all the above measures and regular medications, if your cough, sputum, and breathlessness increase and your asthma, bronchitis, or wheezing symptoms worsen, please consult your doctor immediately. Do not delay contacting a health care professional, your chest & respiratory doctor or a pulmonologist.
